My Computer today:
Pentium 133
128MB
4 MB S3 Virge, PCI requires generic SVGA-driver
5+17 GB HD

I have some problems running x, discussed previous, I'm still not sure why but won't use KDE or Gnome any more.
I have money to buy only one thing, should that be:
1) 128 MB RAM or 2) AMD K6-500 or 3) S3 8 MB AGP.
I'm not running games (no time :( ) I mostly use WYSIWYG-editors, do some networking & (hopefully) soon create a database (educational).
Any suggestions?

I would say CPU. I'm running a Celeron 400 with 128M RAM and it's just fine for office use.

It is easy to keep ram consumption low (especially since you are not running KDE or Gnome).

I would also go for a faster CPU, provided the motherboard/BIOS can handle it?

Cheers! :)

Right, I don't know any P1 motherboard that would support an AMD CPU. The RAM would be different too I think ...

Did you look at it x?

i assumed it is either a socket 7 mobo that supports both pentium and amd k6-2
or

x meant cpu and mobo upgrade

OK, everybody woting for a new CPU, that's what it'll be!
Yes, I have checked the mobo's manual. It handles Pentium and AMD K6 up to 550 Mhz.
It takes 4 DIMM memory modules too, rather modern mobo even if it's rather ancient today (AT-model)... I'm not changing it since I'd have to change so much then.
Thanks guys!

A faster CPU is most definate. I've seen on www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) that 8mb Rage Pro video cards go for $20 or less. The mach64 chipset will do excellent 2d work.

Hrm... you seem to be in a quandry.

A new CPU will likely require a new mobo and ram - although your current board may be able to support a 200 or 233 intel, or maybe even a sub-300 AMD. But, what you would pay for one of these cpu's may be more than its worth.

Your machine probably won't directly address more than 64mb of ram, so more ram that you wouldn't be able to use later would basically be a waste of money.

And a new video card really won't do much for performance unless it is either a really wimpy card, or you play games.

I'd see about getting a low-end p2 system used - I've seen P2-233/266 systems lately that have been really cheap.
