I installed mandrake 8. It was a real hassle to get the video card and the fonts right among other things. So I thought all was well but NO. Seems there is no support for ISO9660 and the os recognizes my secound cdrom (recording type) as a scsi device! So the only solution is to rebuild the kernal which I would do. But I am stumped on the first few options (processor type) and I can not find reference to them anywhere. What are PGE extensions? And what is 820 proc support?

You cannot read cd's at all with your first drive?

It is normal for CRR(W)'s to use scsi emulation as it is necessary for them to work as recorders. Don't worry about that.

I would think that if your install detected and setup scsi emulation, it would have setup iso9660 support.

No there isn't iso9660 support./proc/filesystems shows ext2 sockfs etc. but no ISO9660. In proc/devices there is no scsi or ide device listed for the second cdrom. There is scsi emulation for it. It is possible to read on the first device. As to the wealth of information in the how-tos man pages etc. Excuse me but I have a job a family etc. and I've spent several hours looking for this or I wouldn't be asking: What is proc 820 support? And what are PGE extensions? Fact is there is simply too much information available for rather trivial items or there is a wealth of overly technical information.
