I have a Dell XPSpro200, 64mb ram, 8gig (win)4 gig (linusx Mandrake), 4 gig (scsi /user), 4 gig (scsi /var), 8 gig (scsi /home).

I purchased this modem and it works fine under win, but is not recognized in linux. When I tell it to query the modem, it says modem is busy. It is on ttys01, the com 2 port under win. I use freei.net but can even get that to work under OSX on a G3/799mhz.(Slightly overclocked)

Help? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/confused.gif

Hate to tell you this, but it will not work in Linux. Tried to make one work myself when I first began to use Linux, then learned about "Winmodems".

Software modems such as this will not work with Linux. You must use a "real modem". Luckily I have an external USRobotics and it works great. Just about all internal modems are software/winmodems.

Sorry for the bad news,

Absolutely right about the Winmodems. However, you can still buy hardware internal modems (I have two older ones, an ActionTec Desktalk and a Cardinal Connecta). Hardware modems have jumpers that allow you to manually set the port and IRQs. They also cost twice as much or more than the cheap Winmodems. A bit more hassle than just plugging in an external modem but then it doesn't take up space or require a separate power connection.

If you buy an external modem, do not get a USB version -- yet.
