ALSA for ESS Allegro-1

I was wondering if anyone had gotten ALSA to work with the ESS Allegro-1 sound card. (In compaq laptops). Someone had mentioned trying SB emulation, but I am not sure how.

i have an ESS Solo-1, and its configured by OSS. it works anyway. i get a strange buzzing sound when the volume is up. buzzes even more when i move the mouse. the buzzing fades a bit when i have multiple running processes which is odd. i have checked both ALSA and OSS for updates to their software, but didnt see anything.

i recently installed Unreal Tournament to the same machine. i get sound in the game, but it lacks stereo. there is also a strange delay in the weapon sound FX's.

is ALSA a better option than OSS for ESS sound chips?
