Up until now I have only ever used mainstream (NEC mutlisync series) monitors on my linux systems. If I were to ever use linux on my current primary system however it would have to detect my refresh rates automatically just like windows does. Do any version of xFree86 (like 4.0.2) support this?

AFAIK, NO. Unless you choose your monitor type configuration in RH. But it's pre-selected though it's not auto detect.

Too bad, guess that answers that question. I'm not going to use linux on my primary box again until I DON'T have to ditch my nice 19' flatscreen(not panel) monitor from a generic company.
