I can download from napster and play them with xmms. But I can not play any from mp3.com it says that I am missing a component to play mp3's. What do I have wrong? Is this a setting? Any help would be appreciated.

What component does it say you are missing?

Check what plugins you have installed (ctrl-P)

most mp3.com artists have encoded their mp3s in special form so you cannot make wav or cdr or au files out of them.(thus cannot burned to an audio cd). Perharps that is the reason why your xmms is not reading it correctly. Frankly speaking, i don't know why your xmms is not reading the mp3s, mine worked fine with mp3.com's mp3s.

ok, this is just an idea, but try setting the mime type to the mp3 stream(this is just an outline...don't ask me for any real specs..dunno em) in nav's prefs dialog. Basically, when it tries to receive an mp3, it will stream it with xmms...

beware, this is all pipe dreaming, for i really don't know of a "plugin" that it would be looking for. i've been meaning to work on this problem myself lately, yet with no motivation on my part.

xmms likes shoutcast-style streams right?

Check the file extensions too. xmms won't play mp3's with an extension other than .mp3 . I have had that problem because with gnapster, if I try to download two files of the same name (for example if someone is too slow, so I see if I can get the song faster from someone else), it names one of them filename.mp3 and one filename.mp3.1 (the next one is .mp3.2, etc.). xmms refuses to play the .mp3.1 files until I rename them to .mp3 . That might be your problem. I'm not sure if it's ok with .MP3 instead of .mp3 either.

Ok I checked everything mentioned here and still nothing. I downloaded a program called plugger that is supposed to automagically use the correct plugin but it isn't working. I can download the files and then play them but not directly from the site. It does not mention a specific component that is missing just that I do not have anything that can play mp3's. I tried as root as well and still not working. Any more thoughts?

Ok update....

I come home and decide to play with this again and now when I go to mp3.com or any mp3 sit I still can't play it, I get an error that say I do not have the proper mimetypes installed. But, if I try to download it, it starts playing but it does NOT download? I also get an error that there is junk at the beginning and the a string of numbers. Any clues? I can play wav files fine and while it was playing the mp3 I checked and xmms was not what it was using, how do I change thator find out what it is using. I went into preferences/applications/MPEG and set it to use application and set the path to /usr/share/xmms. I am lost on this, any suggestoins will be tried and I will send the winning reponse a cookie (from Krogers of course).
