Running Mandrake 7.1, usual bells and whistles, a lot of stuff I don't understand.
The trouble: modem (Actiontec) dials only under linuxconf, appears to connect, but does not. After about a minute, hangs up, tries again. grep for ppp in /var/log/messages gives "PAP authentication failed". Gnome ppp gives "pppd daemon died suddenly", pretty familiar message. Tried everything listed in these pages, ie including #auth in /etc/ppp/options. No good.
Most mysterious of all: it was working before. I have no idea why it quit. And the ISP isn't much help. Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance.
