I have a generic 40x CD-ROM. Now, unless the manufacturer lied or something, it seems like I have one that is much slower. When ripping an audio CD the fastest it can rip at is around 4x. Yet my 12x10x32 CD-R can rip at around 15. When coping a CD the fastest I can write at is 8x because at 10x or 12x my CD-ROM can't keep up with my writer so the only way to write at these speeds is to copy the CD to my HD first. The wierd thing is that my friend has a 16x DVD-ROM that is also a 40x CD-ROM. But he can write at 16x with no problem. Something's wrong here. My friend seems to think that DVD players just read a lot faster. Is this the case? Or do I just have a crappy CD-ROM? If so can someone recomend a good one?

Yeah, that sounds about right.

You should always write from the hdd anyway, this is SOP.

Could be. I'd recommend anything by Plextor.

I'm confused then. If 4x for 40x sounds about right then why can my CD-R which only reads at 32x rip at 15x?
