you can check this out, doesn't do as much as partition magic, and not as easy to use, but read through the page, maybe it will work for your situation and its free :)

DiskDrake, it comes with Mandrake. Works exceptionally well.

Lookup BootIt NG. It makes you put it on a floppy, but big deal, if you screw something up you'll want to have it on one anyway. I've succesfully reorganized/resized my parts with it half a dozen times while leaving my Windows setup intact. Since I'd installed Windows on E: this was a bit complex and very time consuming, but doing things with this program is pretty easy. Since I had months worth of downloads and more time than I care to admit to in getting Windows as it was, I didn't want to reinstall it or lose my downloads. I did run into a little problem, but it was because of fooling around with things when I was way too tired to pay attention to what I was doing.

Visit http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/parted.html for the GNU version of a Partition Magic type tool. It works, though I did manage to create partitions that didn't quite fit the disk geometry. I managed to use it to split a Win98 HD to 1/3 the size and give it over to Linux. Not quite as complex as the document makes it sound, but still something that may end up destroying information.

thanks lads! a friend lent me copy of partition magic (eventually) and that did the job quite well. i was a bit afraid to use the first application i came across (wasn't clear as to what i was doing) but i will try the last few suggestions for use in later situations (it'd be a bit ungreatful to you if i didn't). i couldn't use disk drake (it didn't like shrinking it much) which is a shame cos it was kinda cool. the gnu part. mag. sounds cool though so i'll have a butchers at that programme. okay, bye! ;)
