Hi gang, When I try to bring up xwc in root it ties up all my resources and never does show up on the desktop. It shows up and works well in user though. In root this has slowed down most of my other programs as well. I believe this was caused by trying to bring up xwc twice (a slip on the mouse). I'm running mandrake 8.0 on an older pentium 200 W/ 128megs ram. This has happened before and my only solution was a reinstall, but now I want to figure this out if I can and learn some more tricks.I looked in var to see if I had created a lockfile but saw nothing with xwc on it.the cpu applet indicates complete use of the cpu that continues for as long as I wait (20 mins or so) Im pretty sure I did'nt close out the original two instances although I tried to before I loggedout. also I went into usr/bin to check permissions and they looked unchanged, although I reset them any way. The last time this happened I tried to uninstall and reinstall xwp with no results. So I end up reinstalling the whole system to repair and end up with a couple of hours of work every time. After a fresh install every thing works like a champ, xwc usually pops up in a few seconds and is ready to run.so I dont beleive this is really tied to my having a slower cpu and a relatively modest amount of ram. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Thanks JS

Yeah aometimes, cuz you put stuff in it only to have it disapear forever. It's x windows commander, a file manager in the mandrake distro that has a nice unpacking feature for tar gz files and shows hidden files well. I've had other programs slide off into the system before, first sign is always no response from the taskbar icon.
thanks JS

I have NEVER before heard of it, and I wouldn't know why 'root' won't work.
(Maybe because it has built-in log-in features? I know irc-ing as root is very stupid also.)
You CAN kill it though..'kill -9 <PID_OF_APP_HERE>'
Why don't you try midnite commander (mc)? I could also recommend KFM, XFM and there are plenty of others.

Yeah they are good. I run into this problem when I'm in root to install a program and I look at these situations as a way of learning how linux (or my distro ) works. Thanks for the help but I'm still trying to find out where the shrapnel went.Where would you actually find the PID for a file manager, although I think you are suggesting that I enter the command to kill off xwc in the console, right?
