I can't play any mpeg files. the sound comes through but i get a black screen... I'm using mplayer.. any suggestions?

Try xmms to eliminate mplayer as the problem.

Just did and it does the same thing unless I use it full screen

BTW DIVX plays just fine

I think i may have found my problem.. :) In case anyone cares this is copied from the Mandrake Cooker Weekly News Page..

XFree86-4.1. The first major new version after XFree86-4.0 has arrived. Many new features have made their way into this release: support for GeForce 3, G450, but also 3d acceleration support for Radeon chipsets and Trident Cyber9388; to notice also, more drivers support the Anti-Aliased fonts engine. As always, many bug fixes are in, among others the famous problem with 3dfx boards not displaying video with smpeg is now history.

I'm using Mandrake 8 with a VooDoo 3 3000 AGP.. :)
