if Linux is open source... why does it cost money to buy Red Hat and other more commercial versions of Linux,

OpenSource does not mean free of charge, but simply that the source is freely available.
RedHat is still available for free by downloading the ISO files. When you buy the product you get the CDs along with printed manuals and a limited amount of support from the vendor.
Paying for a Linux distro is not a bad and evil thing, since this helps those companies to stay alive. However, their main source of income is usually from customers paying for support etc.
