I'm just wondering what the differences between the window systems are... I know selecting is all a matter of personal preference, but would others be more suited to particular users? I'm a straight-up linux newbie that's never had any past experience with linux, unix or anything like that... I'm using KDE right now, seem to enjoy it, but is there something in Gnome or another system that I'm overlooking? Thanks =)

Not a whole lot of difference. KDE comes with its own window manager and uses that by default. I belive Gnome uses Sawfish WM by default. Both have their advantages and both have their disadvantages. I suggest giving both of them a go. I use Gnome, and I love it. KDE tends to be a little more newbie-oriented, but they're both freakin easy to use.
For more detail, do a search in the DE/WM forum for KDE and Gnome. Threads like this pop up almost daily.
