is it possible to connect to the internet with Red Hat 7 using netscape without having to use a proxy server...

Sure. You just need an ISP and a modem. Use the PPP software to connect directly to your ISP and that's it.

You might want to see the Modems (http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/hardware.html#HWMODEMS) section of the Linux HOWTOs to make sure you have a modem that is supported. Some Winmodems aren't supported.

If you do have a winmodem, you might get it to work. Check out http://www.linmodems.org

i have done that before
ICS includes a dhcp server, so if you plug the linux box, with nic into the hub that w2k box is attached, just get the nic up, set for dhcp and you will get a 192.168.*.* ip address from the ICS box, once you can ping the ICS box (192.168.0.1) then you should be able to access the internet, although you might have some dns troubles at first, once you get going make sure you can ping both url's/domain names as well as ip addresses, then try the same inside your browser

let us know if you get stuck ;)

I am doing that very thing right now all you have to do is get your nic driver loaded and set it for dhcp it takes care of everything else. even dns.

I don't suppose it's Nutscrape crashing on you is it? I can never keep it running more than 10 minutes.

Seems like everything makes Netscape crash. I have 6.0 and it crashes if I have more than three windows open, which is often if I'm researching a problem on this bbs.
