Check the temperature settings in the BIOS toypiano 06-18-2001, 03:28 PM that happened to my computer, i was in another room it took me like 10 seconds before i shut it off. Now it won't turn on at all, is tha bad? todd godot 06-18-2001, 03:33 PM i believe you fried your processor, yes, that's bad :( fancypiper 06-18-2001, 03:37 PM I have had a cpu fan to go bad and make a racket. You might want to check the fans. Derango 06-18-2001, 04:56 PM Another possibility is that a "Friend" set up your computer to play a siren sound at a certain time ;) Probably not though... toypiano 06-18-2001, 04:56 PM the weird thing is, my pc speakers isn't plugged in, it is broken??? My last computer did the same thing, it would make weird siren noises and then not turn on, but without the speaker being plugged in. Also it turned it self on before making the noise, it is seriously a ghost machine todd shaggy112 06-18-2001, 05:00 PM do you use any virus software? someone controlling a trojan could do this. toypiano 06-18-2001, 05:05 PM nope no virus software? I had no internet connection, accept I guess I connected to the internet once a while ago before everything died. But now this computer has died it is a new harddrive motherboard processor and ram?? todd Craig McPherson 06-18-2001, 05:33 PM A bad hard drive wouldn't stop the computer from powering up, and even with no functional RAM, you'd at least get some effort out of it when you turned it on. I'd say the first thing to check is the power supply, then the CPU, and if both of those check out, the motherboard. Ace69 06-18-2001, 05:49 PM What Craig said. ;) theclave 06-18-2001, 06:10 PM OK, it's not a fried processor or dodgy RAM or owt like that. The 'siren' noise happens while the machine is turned on and working happily - and, other than the blummin annoying noise everything continues to work fine. Craig McPherson 06-18-2001, 07:32 PM Have you tried taking the cover off your case and strapping a giant box fan to the side? Crewchief 06-18-2001, 09:16 PM I had a old system do the same thing once or should I say still. What I found was it was the hard drive... According to Seagate they put a metal strap that lays on the end of the spindle and after it warms up makes noise. My drive still makes that noise and still works fine. That was over 5 yrs ago. If I was diaging the box I would probably disconnect the drive and boot it into some OS and let it sit there for a while to see if the noise goes a way. Also check your mobo manual if you have one and see if there are any audioable warning signals to the internal speaker. These are only suggestions. If you give us more info on the hardware it may be easer to diag. navy-linux 06-18-2001, 11:38 PM My mobo will beep at me like that if I unplug my case fan. Check your bios to see what the temps are after the system has been running for a while. That is if your bios has that option. Most of the new ones do. I also have a program supplied by the motherboard to monitor the mobo temps and settings. Other then it is a winblows program. :D theclave 06-19-2001, 05:45 PM I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem - the machine dual boots linux and Win98. This problem only happens when using linux. justlinux.com
