Go out and get a real modem and install it. If the modem can be used in Linux, Mandrake will auto detect it. If it does not, it's scrap.

i know that the creative isa 56k modem isn't a bad modem and the actiontec isn't a bad one either. i was looking at the mandrake install setup program and it shows them installing an actiontec modem so know that it should at least work. please help me out i know nothing about installing a modem in linux...

Just referred another to the ISA PnP Modem NHF (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/modems/isapnp.html) which may also help you. Should at least get you started.

I think you're referring to the ActionTec PCI by Lucent? If so, that is indeed a supported modem in Linux, tested with the RedHat and SuSE kernels. However, there are some scripts that need to be run for it to be detected. You may, after having read the NHF (of course :)), want to head to Lucent's website and check for more details, possibly to see if they offer the script there. I know SuSE's website has the scripts, but I don't know if it will work on your distro. Let us know the results, and good luck!

How do you know that the modem is not installed? have you tried to access it? it could be installed and just not configured properly, i couldn't access my modem in Drake 7.1 until i figured out how to configure it.

If that really is a Lucent based modem, then it will work, with the right drivers. Visit LinModems.Org for assistance.

And folks, please don't people that their hardware is scrap just because you don't know how to make it work...

My winmodem works fine under linux, and my download speeds are awesome. Why should people be forced to buy an expensive modem when an inexpensive and plentiful one works?
