Does it need defragging? mrBen 06-18-2001, 08:34 AM No. It has a better filesystem than Windows, which keeps things nice 'n' neat. :) Stween 06-18-2001, 02:23 PM Although its not perfection :) (damn im gonna get shot down in flames for that one....) Certainly when partitions on my system reach maximal mount counts i see some pretty high figures for the 'non-contiguous' part.... There arent any real solutions for defragging under linux as far as i know, coz in general it does do a good job of keeping it tidy. You can defrag manually by making a backup, formatting the original partition and copying things over to the fresh partition in a certain order... ... but then there really is no need :) Stween X_console 06-18-2001, 02:33 PM There's no need to defrag it. However, someone did write a program for defragging the ext2 Linux filesystem. I've forgotten where it can be found, but if you make a search at http://www.freshmeat.net you should find it. It was in beta the last time I checked it, so I suggest you backup your system before you try this. Craig McPherson 06-18-2001, 06:37 PM The Linux program is called "Defrag". It looks a lot like the old DOS defrag. The biggeest problem with it is that it can NOT defrag a mounted filesystem. Therefore, if you want to defrag your root filesystem, you have to jump through some hoops. I wouldn't recommend defragging ANY of your filesystems unless they've seen 4+ years of heavy usage. It's just not needed for a very, very long time. justlinux.com
