I heard that the only legal way to get SUSE free was through some FTP thing. Does this work? If yes, how do I do it?

You can ftp or see if there any stores out your way that carry it. The Suse site has directions for ftp installing. Be prepared for a very long install even with high-speed.

I haven't seen SuSE in any stores around here. I'll check around, though. How do I do the install from FTP?

select only the packages you need.
