my 1 gig hrz amd 266 fsb is reporting as a 756 mg hrz WHY?

I don't know why it is doing this. The bios is set correctly and post reports it as a 1 gig hrz 266 fsb (not overclocked) yet in mandrake 8 it comes up as a 756 mhz.

Have you recompiled your kernel? I believe in your kernel setup you would change the type of processor you have.

No I haven't done that. However it is odd. I've loaded mandrake and red hat dozens of times and this is the first this has happened. Hmmm. I will give the recompile a try.
