I've got an old portable computer, and I want to install some version of Linux on it. Now, the problem is - don't laugh, I'm serious! - it's a 386, with 3 Mb RAM, and 40 Mb HD. Portable comps cost a lot, I got this for free, and I just don't have the money to get a serious machine.

Can someone tell me if I have any chance of installing linux on that technological wonder? Where do I find a free, really small distribution? Notice that I don't need X (the display probably wouldn't allow it, btw), or even network support - just the barest thing. Any idea?

this isn't your first experience with linux is it?

anyway, read this (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=12&t=000420) thread about installing slackware onto a 486sx33 CPU, just under 4mb of ram, 300mb drive
it may give you a starting point, and you might be able to contact ph34r for additional guidance

welcome to LNO! :)
