System start up?

ok what are checks performed and programs started as my linux box boots. I would guess the first one is a CMOS check and some where in there it would have to start what ever demons i'm runing, but has anyone got a list or know where I can find one?

Also you can get some info on your machine's boot sequence by running "dmesg" as root.
