I have windows 2000 server set up as a NAT server with etho0 as the interface to the internet and etho1 as the interface to the internal private network. I have this setup up serving up internet access to 4 computers running windows 2000 pro and 1 computer running windows 98 and a new machine running Mandrake 8.0. all of the windows machines access the net through the server using 1 ip address but no matter what I do netscape will not or can not find the net, I set the linux machine up for automatic ip addressing and it gets an address from the server as it shows up when I check into the ip leasses.

I set all the windows machines to use dhcp and the linux box the same, I am using the address of the servers xxx.xxx.x.x etho1 as the gateway for the windows machines and everything works fine. the server takes the packets from etho1 and passes them on to etho0 and all this goes through a comercial firewall.

When I try to access the web with netscape on the Mandrake machine it dies with a tcp error message. I discovered internet conection sharing on the linux box but it seems it is for the linux box to share its connection and not the other way around.

what I would like to know is what to do to set it up so that the linux box will go through my windows server to get to the internet, I am not using dns or anything else on the server, just Network Adress Translation and 2 ethernet cards. I dont have proxy server running or anything. I have all non essential ports closed off and only allow listed programs to pass the firewall.

This is the second time I have tried to give linux a chance to see if usability has improved and I have to say that this new release is very good, the only thing that seems to be consistent is getting on to the internet when it is part of a windows network realy sucks, this should not be this dificult. It seems to take longer to integrate one linux box into the network than it took to set the network up in the first place. I realy don't need another computer as the ones I have work very well but I would like to get to the point where I can offer this alternative to my clients but if they would have more problems keeping things level than with windows then it just isn't worth it. The old saying about the first time you get paid but the second time is free comes into play here.

I would welcome any help on this matter.

from the linux box

can you ping the ip of the w2k box ?
can you ping the ip of google.com ? (216.239.35.100)
can you ping the url google.com ?

if you can hit everything by ip, but not by url, then it is a dns problem
try to enter the isp dns info into linux, or setup a proxy server on the w2k box then setup the linux box to use the proxy

let us know what you find out :)

I can ping the servers internal address from the linux box but nothing else either by url or ip. however I can ping all of the above from the windows 2000 pro box setting right beside the linux box. I did not set up the proxy server on the windows server as I was trying to be as secure as possible, in fact I have the bare minimum of services running, if I don't need them I leave them off.

The win2k box can hit anything I ping but the linux box can't, why is this and why can't the process be easier? Could the Firewall be part of the problem? Is linux unable to work through a NAT server?

The only thing I did on the windows machines was enter the address of the internal card as the gateway and everything worked great. When I try to do the same thing on linux I get nothing.

I also entered the dns of the ip but not the ip address. Linux wont let me do that. The main exercise was to remain as invisible as possible.

If you can tell me where in Mandrake 8.0 I need to enter these I would like to know.
