I am at the windows manager selection. This is a 486 box with only 35mb of ram and a crappy video card and monitor. I only want enough get me into config files and samba's swat. Can you make a suggestion guys and gals.

WindowMaker
If you have the harddrive space go ahead and install KDE cause it has alot of useful GUI utilities. But definately don't try to boot into KDE on a 486... man that is one painfully slow process!

what do you need X for at all then? why not just go for CLI only?

TWM is the lightest-weight window manager i have seen. its also uglier than sin. blackbox is a nice looking, really fast WM.

Thats not one of my choices... But wmaker is. I am going to assume its the same thing. I really want something scaled way down cause for the most part this system is going to mostly command line file server and won't need the gui once its up and running.

Yes, the Debian Windowmaker package is called "wmaker."

Icewm is another very light Window Manager -- probably a lighter than Windowmaker. It's also a lot more Windows-like, which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your opinion.

But you don't need X installed to use SWAT. SWAT should work through Lynx or Links -- I've never tried it, but it looks like it would.

Swat would work just fine through lynx, or you could just open the port in /etc/inetd.conf and point a remote system's browser at hostname:901 and control everything remotely.
