startX error?

I have been getting an error in mandrake when i type startx that says

xauth: creating new authority file /root/.XAuthority
execve faild for etc/X11/X (errno 2)

please help I jus wanna get to the gui in it. :mad: :confused:

If you try
/sbin/telinit 5
do you get the same error?

but now it says something about like
connection refused unable to connect to x server :confused:

Try creating a new user and see if the same thing happens. Perhaps your
.Xauthority file is screwed up. You can always delete it and a new one
will be created when you startx the next time. I remember having a
problem similar to this one time and I think I fixed it by creating the
new user. Of course if its root that can't startx then thats a little
more difficult.
Try the below commands as root and see if you get similar results.

$ xauth list
WackyPuter/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 61a4373f643ec51f8e745ad2c681995f
$ xauth info
Authority file: /home/admin/.Xauthority
File new: no
File locked: no
Number of entries: 1
Changes honored: yes
Changes made: no
Current input: (argv):1
