I have never used linux before, so I'm sure this might sound like a stupid question to all you experienced linux users, but here it is.

Today I tried to install linux mandrake on my pc. I currently have windows 98 running on it, and I only have 1 hard drive. I was under the immpression you could still install linux as long as you used a completely separate partition than the partition that has windows on it. So I created a second partition for linux. I ran the install program and everything was going good until I got to the 'Disk Druid' part. I created the 'Linux Swap' partition with no problem, but when I tried to create the 'Linux Native' root partition "/", it wouldn't let me. It gives me a message that says something like: Boot file to big.(I don't remember the exact wording.)

What do I need to do? Obvioulsy I'm doing something wrong. Any suggestions for a complete newbie to linux?

How big is the hard drive and what size are the partitions you are making for / and /swap?

Which version of Mandrake?
Commercial boxed set CDs, or burned your own from ISO files?
Size of partition you alocated for installing Linux?

The hard drive is 20 GB. The swap I made 128 MB. For The "/" I tried just about every value possible, but none of them worked. The lowest I tried setting it to was 1 MB the highest I tried was 2500 MB.

It's an older version of Mandrake. version 6.5

It's the comercial boxed set, I didn't download and burn it to a cd. The size of the partiton I made for linux using fips was 4 GB

If your hardware is of any recent date (read 'bleeding edge'), the Mandrake 6.5 may have severe problems recognizing stuff like ATA66/100 IDE controllers, etc.
Try downloading a more recent version :)

:: sarcasm :: Yeah, download 8.2. It works with all the bleeding edge hardware. Including keyboards! :: sarcasm ::*

*Please note that any statement above may have been absolutely biased. Due to the fact that my own computer had incredible problems with the 8.2 installation, and the fact that I had another major problem with the 8.2 installation on a friend's computer today, I have been soured against 8.2.
