console resolution with framebuffer? (2.4.4)

i cant seem to set my console resolution using the conventional vga=8 in lilo.
the res does switch for a second.. then the framebuffer penguin(s) pop up and my res pops back to the default console huge text.

i think i may need to use fbset .. but i cant find a list of modes in the man.

how do i pump the res??

i have a
dual 500 bp6
tnt2 m64 16mb
2.4.4 debian woody
