Sound Problem Under RH

Like several other posts, I'm also having trouble with the volume under Gnome/Enlightenment (RH 6.2) and also under Gnome/Sawfish (RH 7.0).
What works:
+ CD Players, RealPlayer play CD's and .ra files
+ esd (makes noise)
+ sndconfig
+ gmix (volume enabled)
+ Enlightenment and Sawfish sound enabled

What doesn't work:
- Desktop sounds like login, logoff, panel open/close, etc.

The desktop sounds worked at one time, and at least for a couple of weeks.

BTW it's a SB 64 Gold card

Any idea how to get desktop sound effects working?

I'm away from the linux box right now but...

Did you try enabling desktop sounds in the gnome control panel? I think its under the heading sound, there's a small button in that menu.

(personally I found them too irritating so I turned them off)

Yes, sound is enabled both under Gnome and Sawfish. Seems like there's alot of other posts with the same problem. Has anyone resolved it?
