Mandrake 8.2 install fails on Compaq laptop

Does anyone have any suggestions on my attempted install of Mandrake 8.2 on my Compaq Armada 7400? After the install and Drakx loader (dual boot), I get nothing but a black screen. When I try 'fail-safe' I get constant pages of scrolling of Hex-like codes. I'm extremely frustrated because I have tried re-installing several times each yielding the same results. I searched Mandrake for suggestions on my model PC, but didn't find anything. Should I just throw in the towel or am I most likely doing someting wrong? Thank You

L0L This theme seems to be apparent on a number of systems...join the club. I actually did manage to get it to install - once it does, it's not worth it. Get 8.1 instead.

What are your laptop specs and how to you have the hd partitioned? Also where did you install the bootloader... mbr or root/boot partition?

Any readme's etc. on the install cd that have any suggestions for situations like yours?
