Hiya All Linux Masters,

I downloaded redhat 7.1 and burned it to cds. i couldnt get it to install from the cd. the installer said it could not find the file.
I tried the boot: hda=cdrom, boot: hdb=cdrom, boot: hdc=cdrom and boot: hdd=cdrom. it still wouldnt work so i tried installing it from the hard drive.
It started installing from the hard drive with no problems.....until....after the prliminary gathering of info, it was doing it's thing then it stopped and put up a bug message and stopped installation.
The prompt requested that i select save and save the bug info on a floppy, so I did.
I'll have to run the install again to find out exactly,
but the bug message said something about not being able to write to or write a file and it showed a file path "user/something/somethimg//anaconda/something". notice the double slashes "//" i found this unusual for a pathname. also I remember the 'anaconda' directory name and i think there was a 'foo' directory too.

If you want i'll send you that bug info it made me save
or tell me how to read the info off of it.

by the way, where do i send that bug info floppy? the prompt suggested that i report it.
I emailed redhat and asked what to do with it and they didnt respond yet.

I'm installing linux on it's own empty, formatted partition "drive e:" with 13.6 gigs of space availiable.
The iso files i'm installing from are in partition "drive d:" and windows me in drive c.

Thanks a bunch,
-Tony

Did you put burn the iso into the cd? Where is your cdrom drive loacted? on what controller?

i copied each iso file to a cd. is there a special way it is to be put on the cd (like when i put the installer on the floppy using rawrite)?

as far as where the cdrom is located, i cant read the screen at boot up to see where it is it goes by to fast. i'll have to open it up to see which eide it is pluged into.
is there a utility on windows or a dos command that shows this location????

Thanks,
-Tony

You will not have to find out where the CDROM is, just

R T F M

;)

No offense, but I really recommend reading the README file that should be there. You have to make the CD bootable, copying it will not be enough. I don't know much about burning CDs, but ISO is a special file that already contains path information and such. Copying it will simply not do :)

The other stuff should work fine when the machine is able to boot from CD, and remember to switch your boot order to CDROM, ... in the BIOS.

Copying the iso to CD will just give you a CD that contains the same iso that is sitting on your HD.

Think of a iso as a zip file. It needs to be extracted to the CD in order to see the files it contains.

Are you using CD Creator? If I remember correctly, select from the file menu, create CD from image. Next change the filetype to iso and then browse to the location of your iso image.

I believe that www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) has instructions on how to burn CD's from iso images using popular CD burning software.

Hiya All Linux Masters

Wouldn't it be www.linuxmasters.org (http://www.linuxmasters.org) then? ;)

yup... my cd burning software will unpack iso files and is in the proccess of doing it.
thanks for the tutor, i didnt realize that .iso was like a zip or tar. you folks sure are the best.

i did some looking around the redhat ftp server again and found the readme that showed the unpacked structure of each disk(i think)...which showed a file named 'autorun' on the list(that was my clue)...
um...heh..heh..heh...like..um..this is all starting to make sense and stuff
...heh..heh...heh...cool...heh

i'll give it another try with the cd's properly layed out.

i'll let you all know how it turns out.

Many gigs of thanks,
-Tony

Maybe I didn't make myself clear or I'm not understanding your reply. Are you extracting the file structure from the iso before burning the CD?

If so, then that is not necessary as you just need to (in CD Creator) select file, create CD from image, change the filetype in the dropdown list and then browse to where the iso resides. This will read the iso, extract the filesystem and burn it to CD.
