I just installed LinuxMint 11 on a couple of machines. One is a Core i7 920 with a GTX260 and the other is an Atom 330 with whatever video system is on with that one. (It's a shuttle with with the onboard video. I forget the video specs.)

But... so far... on both machines... it's looks really good. I don't know if it will help me with my folding woes, but I like what I see so far.

oops... I have computers stacked on top of each other. The LinuxMint is not on the Shuttle. It's on a Dell Vostro 200 with onboard graphics. The Shuttle is my Windows XP tftp machine for my CCNA home lab.

Linux Mint is currently the 2nd most popular distro in Distrowatch.com. It is another mighty offshot of Ubuntu/Debian.

It's been hard on the heels of Ubuntu, for quite a while.

part of that , just might be the conservative nature of it's founder :)

it has more than a good chance @ actually bieng the the Distrowatch No. 1;)

I'm planning to give Mint a try next time I have to reinstall my laptop. I have issues with the way Ubuntu does some things, and from what I hear Mint would eliminate a lot of those. Unfortunately I reinstall systems so rarely these days that it could be years before I get to that point. :)

I like Scientific Linux 6, and installed it on an old emachine. I also put it on an HP mini netbook. The only problem I have identified on the netbook is the wireless is hard. I thought I had everything present, but got a make error on the wireless driver. I may just kiss off on it, and put in Mint with a flash drive install, which I bet will install and connect everything. Of course, if I get a burst of a m b i t i o n, I might try again. I, too, do not like to be installing a lot.

(What on earth is wrong with that word I had to space out?)

Probably it was used as the domain for one of the spammers we used to get a lot. For a while they just started censoring the domains instead of trying to block every new poster. Stupid spammers.

I've read that Mint is starting to break from ubuntu and going back to a more core debian.

In fact, they have a Debian Mint release, but it is "only" version 10? or something?

Mint was getting a bit weird with their versioning, but I've also read that they are getting rid of all these oddities and going with a "Mint X" rolling release so numbers and versions just kind'a go away.

I just donated my Vostro 200 to the American Legion out here on Kwajalein a couple of days ago. But, when I initially installed Mint on it, it was on my wireless network. It had a LinkSys USB wireless stick in it and Mint had no problem with that.

I had to installed Windows XP back on it for the American Legion needs. Oh, well.

Since then, one of my other computers, with a Q9650 CPU, ran out of Ubuntu 9.10 gas, so I filled it up with Mint 11. That's looking good so far. Ran out of time this morning, but tonight after work I'll get that one back to folding. :)

I like how clean the desktop is in Gnome and yet everything is there. I am disappointed in the kde version though. One thing is during installation they give you an option of password sign in or encrypted home partition which the Gnome version does not have. The package repository only half works.
