I don't think there is a way to see the password... you can use passwd to change it to something you do know though.

To give you a somewhat vague answer, yes, there are ways to find out the root password. They involve cracking the encrypted password located in the /etc/shadow file (or /etc/passwd if you aren't using shadowed passwords.). This can be very easy or extremely time consuming depending on how many characters the password is, if it is alpha-numeric, etc..
If you are interested in this type of thing, let me know, I can get you some linkage on the subject of password auditing

Yes of course I do.

Why would I be telling you it was 5 letters otherwise?

:) :)

Don't let it go to your head whatever you do.

Call you L.D.M? I was going to call you something else entirely. :p

I get the feeling someone is letting you use THEIR root access for some reason and you want to be able to find the root password for whenever this person is not around.

Why not just ask the SysAdmin?

BTW - A 5 character password shouldn't take long to crack at all. I used to crack 'em on my 486/8086 back in the day. Took overnight most times to test every alphanumeric possibility. So, just download John The Ripper, and brute force away. And then make your password longer next time.

I don't think so. Unless, of course, everyone in your family is so... dumb ?

My little brother of 10 once tried to abuse of my o:line, but at least he knew how to do it. You're accidentally root because your brother forgot to logout from root, and you still don't know what to do.
