I installed Redhat Linux 7.2 ... no problems.

When I start up it goes to the command line... no problems.

When I type startx it loads the GUI just fine... no problems.

BUT.... if I ever logout to drop back to the command line my monitor powers down (LED goes from green to orange).... PROBLEM!!!

I have to hit ctrl-alt-del to reboot (and from the sound of it does go thru the shutdown process because it takes a while for it to finish). Then everything starts back up just fine. It will always start at the CLI, but if I go to the GUI and later try to drop back out to the command line, the monitor powers down.

What could be the problem?

Someone please help!

P.S. - I don't think this is version or distro specific, because I believe it did the same thing with RH7.1 and with a version of Mandrake as well. (can't remember exactly, its been a few months since I tried, and had to give up).

Most likely it's a problem with the drivers you are usinng for your video card? Which card do you have? I know that nvidia users experience this lock-up quite a bit, it's never happeend to me since I got my matrox :)

It's an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon (32MB).

I'm using the driver for it from the Red Hat setup program.

Maybe you could try a ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the x server?

No dice...

It appears that once I start X on its merry way, anything I do to leave it is a no-go.

Logout to the command line... monitor power down

Ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X... monitor power down

Switching to another virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-f#... monitor power down

:(

Sorry as I have no idea what could be causing that to happen.

I would search/read the docs at www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) and do some Google searching. Maybe ATI's support site.

What happens if you turn APM off in the BIOS?

jmcross, if I leave X up, it works just fine.

mrBen, I will try turning off APM in the BIOS when I get home this evening.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
