In the Linux community, this is like asking if ther is only one God. Don't do it unless you mind losing a little blood.

I think the best answer is another question:

What do you need Linux for?

The reason for the question is simple. If you need Linux as a desktop workstation with server capabilities, most commercial distros will do: Mandrake, Red Hat, SuSE are all fine choices. If you want to try a Debian based distro, Progeny is a good choice.

If you're looking for a server that's easy to admin, Debian stable is great.

If you're looking for more of a one job Linux distro, it depends on the task.

Do your research, it pays.

I thought that this is an excellent point. Just for the benefit of those who missed it, I did save this link (http://www.linux-mag.com/2001-02/dist_01.html) from one of the posts that points to a distro round-up by Linux Magazine.
