The short story:
I upgraded from 3.3.6 to 4.0.2, and cannot get the config to work with my Voodoo3 and Gateway EV-900 monitor. I've searched the forums, Google, and xfree86.org, but haven't found any resolution (sorry, bad pun). Everything was working under 3.3.6.
The epic version:
System specs:
Gateway P-II 400
64M RAM
10G ATA HD
3DFX Vooodoo3, 8M VRAM
Netgear FA-311 nic
Redhat 6.2, kernel 2.2.14-5.0
Following the instructions in the X4.0.2 NHF and the info at xfree86.org:
Xinstall.sh -check outputs:Kernel version: 2.2.14-5.0
Architecture: i386
Libc version:6.1.3
Binary name of download: Linux-ix86-glibc21
I copied my existing X directories and files to a backup location, downloaded the necessary .tgz files and ran Xinstall. It recognized my existing 3.3.6 install and prompted me to overwrite and/or move older files (and update links), to which I answered yes to all execpt rstart.
At that point it extracted the .tgz files, and, with the exception of a couple of errors concerning font directories, completed the install. I then rebooted out of paranoid habit.
As per the NHF, I did XFree86 -configure, which created the XF86Config.new file. The file contained the right H/V refresh rates and driver (tdfx) info, but had no resolution/mode information in it at all. All screen sections contained a "depth" value, but nothing else.
As per NHF, I then did XFree86 -XF86Config /root/XF86Config.new and chose Voodoo3 (generic) at 1024x768 16-bit color, but it gave my a scrambled, shrunken display when I started X. The only setting in which I could get a stable screen in X was straight VGA. Any other setting/resolutions caused various scrambled displays, or no display at all.
Any help would be hugely appreciated, as I'm stuck posting from Windows until I get this resolved
:(
BTW- isn't X 4.0.2 supposed to use XF86Config-4 instead of XF86Config?
