I'm not sure if asking an other than linux question about a linux box is acceptable but here goes.
Anytime i turn my comp off for more than a couple hours all the bios settings change and to even boot up I need to go change them all back. what causes this and how can i fix it. thanks for your time

Sounds like you might have a dead battery.

I dont know if thats neccesarly caused (however most likely) by a dead battery. When my computer worked and had Linux I couldn't even get to the bios setup.

normally that is dead battery syndrome

nick, did you have a compaq?
older compaq have the setup utility on a special diagnostic partition, if you install linux, that partition can get destroyed (if you aren't careful/don't know about it), then you can't get to the setup/bios prog
