i would like to know if i can install linux and windows on the same machine without using a partition and how would i do this?

Every OS must be on a partition shared or not. Do you mean a partitioning tool?

You can install two versions of Slackware called Zipslack and Bigslack on FAT/FAT32 partitions. See here:

Mandrake also has an option (lnx4win I believe) that will let you install linux in a file on the windows partition. There are some other FAT-installable linuxs around too.
