I know if I keep telling people about this, it's going to start driving up the price, but I never could keep a secret.

My new (used) Dell Optiplex GX-260 clamshell arrived yesterday. Pentium 4, 2.4 Ghz. It came with 512 mb RAM, but before I even turned it on, slipped in another 512 MB. ( The computer that my neightbor threw out only lasted me a few months, before finally going down for good, but I did manage to save the RAM.) Compared to what I was using, this is a great computer. I set it up with Debian Lenny, and it looks really good.

And here (http://www.propertyroom.com/itemdetails.aspx?l=6534384#) is what I paid for it.:) Shipping was 22 dollars.:D

I first heard about the police auction site:

http://www.propertyroom.com

while watching the all-night news CBS. What made me perk up my ears was when they mentioned that, in accordance with the law, the police wipe the hard drives before selling computers. So they come without an operating system. This makes them less valuble to the majority, more valuble to me.

I once bought an expensive computer. Actually, it was custom-built for me by my brother. It was a goddamned lemon. It really seemed to be cursed. The expensive video card needed to be replaced within a month and a half. In the span of a couple years, the motherboard had to be replacfed twice. The cooling system was faulty. The CDRom drives kept needing to be replaced. What I learned from the experience is that the problem with an expensive computer is that if it breaks down, your initial investment requires you to spend more. So I resolved to take advantage of my Linux obsession, and use whatever second-hand computer could be had for less than a hundred dollars. From that point on it was all Pentium IIIs, and that was fine for a while, but eventually I wanted to get a little speed going.

The best part is that I intend to get another one ASAP, so if this one dies I can just strip it for components, and kick it to the curb!

Man... what a great deal on that Dell!!

And now that it's arrived, what a great improvement from the POS old time Celeron I had been reduced to! (I've read that Celeron is better than it used to be, but that sure wasn't one of THOSE celerons!

When the new box arrived, I added some RAM from the computer my neightbor threw away around Christmas, so now I've got a gigabyte of RAM, and 2.4 ghz. I couldn't even watch HULU before, and now I can watch it full-screen, and it looks gorgeous with my expensive LCD monitor. It looks like the best computer I have ever owned may also be damn near the cheapest! Linux made this possible. I wanna get a nice nvidia card for it soon.
