im running a 2 month old dell that im
duel-booting with winme. 700mhz celeron, 20gig hd, and 128sdram. how well would this run in kde and gnome?(the newest versions on mandrake) im just kinda worried about the 128ram deal. would i be better off using freebsd or some unix flavor? if so, which one would you recommend. thanks

If I'm not mistakes (correct me if I'm wrong) BSD, or other *nix alternatives run the same X Windows software. So KDE could also run on BSD, Unix, etc. This doesn't make it faster from what I understand. X Windows should run very well on a computer like yours. I would definitely go with Linux especially if you are extremely new because there is a lot of documentation and support for it.

Yes, my friend that will run Gnome or KDE and the new 2.4.x kernel just fine. You have a nice little system there. I don't believe you have to change to some other flavour of Unix; Mandrake, Corel, Debian, Redhat, Storm. .whichever, will all run nicely on a 700 mhz w/128 meg of ram.

well i hope i can even get to the installation this time :\ i got the mandrake pack from lin central in december. if its corrupted, im gonna be pissed. even though i only paid $6 for it and the expansions, it took them a whole month to get it here(took my new comp only 2 days hehe). but anyways, the first time i tried on this comp, which was in january, i put in the boot disk, put in the cd and entered cd support, then it goes through the normal lines of garbage, it kept freazing up for some reason. any reasons why? i tried it nearly 5 times. excuse my run-ons ;)

DA7,

I'm typing this reponse on a P-II 400 with a whopping 64MB of RAM... believe me, you don't have to worry about your system's firepower.

As for the "normal lines of garbage" and "keeps freezing up" problems, repost with more information (the exact error messages, where/when the system freezes, what cards you have installed, etc.). With that information, I'm sure we can get you up and running

i think the problem last time was that i had put win98 over winme, formatted, reinstalled win98, formatted again, and then put winme back on with all the stuff back. dell gives you a crapload of goodies :) back to the problem tho... i never ran scandisk or defragged. im doing that now. but could thatve been the problem all along? hell i could have 3 months of linux experience under my belt if thats the case... :(

DA7,

No. Scandisk and Defrag don't understand Linux partitions, and therfore can't do squat for/to them.
Please post the info I asked for earlier. If you've done (multiple) reinstalls of Windows you have, at the very least, rewritten your Master Directory Block, taking out your Linux boot loader in the process.
Again: if you post the specifics I asked for earlier, we can get you back on track.
