I've searched the forum for keywords and not found anything quite spot on. Admitted noob.
Toshiba Satellite 1805, Hardy 8.04 installed from within Win2K (reason: W2K DVD playback crappy, thought I'd try HH to see if it was any better). 1.1 GHz, 367 MB Ram (per lshw.html).
Cannot get GUI to run at 1024x768, only 800x600. Splash screen is 800x600 stretched (but pixilated), GUI is 800x600 centered and bordered by thick black bars.
Have updated via Synaptic, have reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-trident package (1:1.2.4-1), have attempted to edit kernel to add "vga=791", have attempted to manually edit xorg.conf. The latter produced no GUI at all (so undid it), the others don't fix the problem.
This has been posted as a bug in a couple of forums I've found elsewhere, and a few other people have posted theoretical solutions to similar problems (involving editing xorg: see above).
Open to suggestions. Oh, yeah, and Totem locks up when I try to play a DVD anyway. I know that's probably separate, but in case it matters, now you know.
