All this jargon is nonsense to me. I dont like Windows anymore, and Mac OS X is just plain crap. Its going to take me a long time to learn any of this stuff.

Oh and one more question, Can I network Win98 and Linux together?

Yes you can. Check out Samba. www.samba.org (http://www.samba.org)

Me too. Wish I could find the secret manual. Start here -> finish here, you can now do what you want and the rest will make you a power-user. I'm pretty dmn good with Windows, Dos... doesn't mean a thing with this new file structure, mounts instead of drives. Seems like compiling your own stuff would be great, but I hate having to work in the command line when I'm not clear on what exaclty my commands are doing .. Oi.

I know the feeling, this is my 3rd attempt in Linux and the farthest I have ever gone. But it gets so frustrating sometimes and makes me want to strip linux and go back to Windows.

Right now im fighting with learning permissions of files and directories. Alll of this xrss---w-rwrrw stuff is making me nuts!! Hehe, Im fighting through tho and Ill learn it if it kills me :)

A lot of people seem to think that Linux is just like Windows. IT'S NOT !!!

Why do you think companies use Unix for running everything from large database applications to scientific research. NASA, X-Files, Lone Gunmen :) and on and on.

Unix/Linux are very complex powerful operating systems that take time to learn properly. If you want something simple, then stick with Windows. If you want an os that can do just about everything, then learn Linux. Only way to do that, is by trial and error, reading, reading and more reading. You'll only get what you put into it.

I find it well worth it. Certainly helps with having to work with AIX (IBM's Unix) at the office.

Good Luck with Linux and you won't regret it.

Yeah samba will let you access windows shares from Linux but you dont need it if all you want to do is internet connection share.

I'm a newbie too and I've had Winblows and Linux networked successfully. Not running it now since Winblows and Linux don't like sharing a single hard disk but that's okay. Maybe as a newbie I could explain things in a newbie fashion. Feel free to e-mail me, I think it's in my profile as is my ICQ and AIM tags.

Yah being a newbie sux. Huge learning curve in all. I've had best luck(learning Linux) by not using the winblows box. I got everything that I use on a regular basis working(connected to the net, email,...) on the Linux box and I plunged myself into the wold of Linux and didn't come up for air. That way your forced to learn. Sink or swim if you will.

All this enthusiasm!.

I believe the expression is ya gotta crawl afore ya can walk....etc etc etc ... it takes time and effort .... as MD pointed out ... its an entirely different world in linux... take your time and learn from mistakes... you will get there ....
