Currently I think Lilo is installed in the MBR. Is there a way to change to configuration so that some other boot manager can go in there, and have Linux boot off either the other boot manager or install Lilo elsewhere?

I'm not very clear what you want to do. But you can remove lilo with "lilo -u" at the command line.
