Hello, I'm new here. As you may have guessed I'm a newbie. Anyway, I have Mandrake 7.2 sucessfully installed and running RP-PPPoE (great program BTW) :). Anyway, I was wondering if Mandrake 8.0 was still beta? If so, when will it be a final release? Also, what are the big differences between 7.2 and 8.0?
Thanks in advance :)

8.0 is in RC1 right now, which is Release Candidate 1. So, it is kinda out of beta, but not released yet. There will more than likely be a RC2 before actual release so it's at least a couple weeks off probably ... though I dont work for or have anything to do with Mandrake so thats just a guess.
As far as difference from 7.2 ... the biggest is it is based on 2.4.x kernel where 7.2 is 2.2.17. Its also will include X 4.0.3, KDE 2.1.1, and lots of other updated packages.

I bought the mandrake 8.0 beta from www.cheapbytes.com. (http://www.cheapbytes.com.) I love it. I have used mandrake 7.1, and 7.2
8.0 had no problems with my sound card. This is a new system compared to what 7.1 and 7.2 was on. I am happy with the install, and operation of drake 8.0
I would recommend it to anyone wanting to try linux.

So, do you think I should just keep 7.2 and update the kernel and some other things until 8.0 is final? Or just leave 7.2 alone and wait for 8.0?

If you update all the stuff you're gonna use yourself with a good install of 7.2 then what's the need for 8.0 at all?
