Just try any of the Linux Live CD

Puppy
Damn Small Linux
Slax
Sidux
Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubunbtu
PCLinuxOS.... etc, etc

I expect most of them work straight away.

You then decide which one (or ones) you want to install them.

I would go with a full linux distro, and not consider puppy or damn small linux. I have nearly identical specs on a dell laptop, and pclinuxos, ubuntu, and simplymepis worked just fine. I would go with one of those.

i put xubuntu on a Dell L400 PIII 700mhz with 256megs of RAM.

It's a nice install and should work fine, just be patient with it and it'll work out fine.

Yea I forth the motion, one of the Ubuntu's would work, or Debian Etch/stable.

I tend to use mostly old hardware 650 mhz to 1 ghz with anywhere from 256 RAM to 512 RAM. I have used mostly the *buntu variants with a good deal of success. Being rather new to *nix I have found it the easiest to install and the support forums are top notch.
