Hi all. Already got help from the Inst forum on this site. Appreciate it. That said,I am looking forward to using Linux.

Question is , can I import the favorites and bookmarks folders from XP-Pro into my PowerPak 2008 Mandriva distro? If so,how.

Tnx, Richard

"Favorites and Bookmarks" are actually the same thing. They're also not tied to an OS, they're tied to a browser. (They're just text files in any browser that I know of, and text files are always portable.) So: What browser (and what version of that browser) were your "favorites and bookmarks" created in when you were running Windows?

Sorry about that. Meant to say favorites and E-Mail address cook. Ver 7 of IE.

I know that the Ubuntu installer has the option, but you have to set it up as dual boot first.

A second choice would be to install both Firefox and Thunderbird under windows - they will import from Outlook, etc. and IE. Once you've got your Tbird and FF profiles, you can back them up to CD, etc. and then bring them into your new Linux profiles for the same apps...

Also, Evolution may be able to import .pst files (from Outlook, etc) - I'd boot with a livecd that has it (like Ubuntu) and see what the import options are...

Your Firefox bookmarks are in a bookmarks.html file in your profile directory (and there are lots of articles on how to find that in both Linux and Windows). You can copy that file from your Windows FF profile to your Linux FF profile to pull in those bookmarks. (Of course, you'll lose any that you have set up now, but hopefully you don't need to keep them.)

There are also files for FF user settings (but I don't know whether those can be copied; I suspect all the settings are the same in any OS, but I'm not sure on that), stored passwords (which probably can't be copied), history, etc.; it's all in the profile directory. (You might be able to get away with copying the entire profile, if you also get profiles.ini and the whole directory structure under it.)

On email settings: I'd just copy the whole Thunderbird profile directory. :)

Just install foxmarks from the firefox addons, makes it easy to carry bookmarks from one os, distro to another.
