Now that I have Fedora 8 I would like to be able to read and write and burn on my CD/DVD
I have a stand alone computer with only one user. But I do not have permission to write on my CD.
Why A distro should set me up this way??

you probably need to add youself to some groups in the /etc/group file.
search "fedora burning group" and see what you get...

I know that I must use command line administration for permissions,
but (more) Fedore offered update down load changes. After 20 minutes of downloading, I was asked to insert CD 1 ?? I have no CD1 so the updates didnt take. Too much like VISTA! So I dumped Fedore 8 and am now on Ubuntu 7.10.
It is more user friendly.
Thanks anyway this should end this info request

CD1?? Why on earth would it ask you for a CD?
Really strange. Never seen that happen before.

I have had Fedora 8 prompt me to insert CD1 when I was installing the package updates. I think it's just bad terminology these days since it really meant for me to insert the DVD into the optical drive...
In any case, for some odd reason Fedora 8 didn't put /sbin into my path so I was a little worried when things like lsmod, lspci, and so on were not working. I added it to my PATH manually and it all works. Seems like Fedora 8 is doing some wacky things...root should be able to use those commands by default!
Incidentally, je_fro I just clicked on your page and noticed some of your sample Java code. You took CS303E didn't you? I watched your JavaCar applet. It was much better than mine. ;)

LOL!!!
Yeah, that's from CS303E. There was extra credit for the top 3 applets, and noone was more suprised than me when I took first place :)

Something funky must have happened with your installation. I was under the impression that you normally have to go out of your way to set Fedora up to look for packages off the cd/dvd once its installed. I installed Fedora 8 and its working great and never asked me for a cd/dvd once it was installed. I did install from teh live cd though so maybe that was the difference. Either way, still seems odd to me. Wonder what went wrong.

Interesting Calipso...I originally had the x86_64 version installed, but it's a virtual machine on my macbook pro and some stuff just wasn't working properly. Particularly the power saving features and when it would go into sleep mode it would basically cause the entire VM to freeze. So I reinstalled with the regular 32-bit/i386 version and it seems much more stable now...but yeah it prompted me for the DVD to do the updates. I can't say what the x86_64 version would do though because I was never able to install the updates properly, and then somehow it magically filled up all of my disk space?
I pretty much selected most of the tools during install as well because I like to have all of the development tools, some scientific tools, etc. I didn't install any of the file servers, network servers, mysql, samba, or anything of that nature however. It could be that it Fedora 8 will prompt you for the DVD if certain packages are selected. Maybe you selected a subset of what I did, or maybe it truly is the live CD? I don't know, but I'm fine with it.

Hi
later (latest) versions added the DVD/CD to the software repositaries so that some downloading could be avoided.
CD/DVD Writing worked out of the standard GUI burners.
The only problem I have with Fedora 8 (32 or 16) is that I can't get suspend or hibernate to wake up properly. Worked on Fed 7 :-(

Yeah hibernation is broken. Pretty annoying. Other than that, I'm happy with it.

Hibernation is big time broken. I ended up disabling it and configuring acpi myself, only to discover wpa_supplicant won`t wake up.

This thread seems to be about a fedora utility called PUP, which allows you to add additional features from your DVD/CDs after install and then becomes a front end to yum. yum. apt and (my favorite) yumex never ask for a DVD/CD.
