Gaim (now called pidgin) can connect to ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, and other IM networks.. probably available on your distributions CD or via apt-get, yum, etc

I can confirm that. Been using Gaim (Pidgin now) on AOL and Yahoo for sometime without any problems. And it can login to other IM services.

Comes with all the distros I've installed. Should be there.

What distro are you running? I have installed this version on Slackware in the past without too much configuration.

You can also use Kopete if you are using kde

Yahoo does provide a linux client, as mentioned above, but I was unable to get it to run on Ubuntu.

Instead, check out Psi. Read the manual, especially the part about setting up transport servers. From one login to a Google Talk (Jabber) account, you can access google talk, AIM, Yahoo and MSN.

The nice thing is, once you have the transports setup, logging into your google talk account by any other means such as the web client or through a smart phone will automatically bring up the transports and all contacts!

After setting up mine in Psi, I now use Gossip IM for my chatting, as it has a nicer interface.

Your distro will have some form of package manager that you'll use to install programs.
