I am currently running Slackware 8.0 with kernel 2.4.5 and KDE. I was running Netscape 6.0, and every so often I would start locking up and getting errors like this:

EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3.5)): ext2_write_inode: unable to read inode block - inode=#####, block=#####

I was able to narror the problems down to netscape I believe. So I removed Netscape 6.0, and downloaded Netscape 6.2 sea. During the installation, my whole system locks up in unbeleivable manners. Anybody experienced this before? Is there a solution so that I can use Netscape?

Since it's throwing a filesystem error at you, a manual fscking of your filesystems might be in order before you try to install the new software.

I have auctually, I did a e2fsck -v -y /dev/hda5 and it did a whole bunch of stuff, over and over again, then I could boot back into linux. Dunno, but I know that didn't solve the problem.

I had a similar problem with Netscape (I could cruise the web as root, but not as user; a very dangerous situation). I finally fixed it by making a full backup of my Linux box ( using PerfectBACKUP), excluding any and all Netscape files. I then reformated the partition, make a basic install of my distro, and PerfectBACKUP, then restored the backup. I then reinstalled Netscape. All is well now. I can cruise the web as user, and get that warm and fuzzy feeling of safety ( until I think about that "proof of concept" virus that can attack windoz and *nix systems.
