Hi All,
Right at the end of the debian 2.2.18pre21 install, I was asked if i wanted to create XF86Config file, [y/n], so I chose [y], it then went into an error loop
......."_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
Unable to communicate with X server!
The /etc/X11/XF86Config file was not created.
Press [Enter] to switch to graphics mode."
which then loops back into itself. I crashed out and discovered most stuff had installed according to plan, but now I have to figure out how to manually configure X. XF86Setup yields a black screen Any hints? (Large, not subtle, may be required here!)
Thanks, Jenny.
Yeah... that can be a pain.... if i wanted to create XF86Config file, [y/n], so I chose [y]. When installing Debian, I always say NO at this point. Makes life easier.
Make sure you have the correct xserver installed. What video card do you use? Using xserver-svga might be a good start. Unless you know for sure what xserver you need.
apt-get install xserver-svga
After installing the xserver, try running XF86Setup or xf86config to reconfigure X.
Keep us posted.
Regards,
Rod

Mine did this on each both of the installs I have does of Debian. Do as Rod said and run XF86Setup then xvidtune to perfect and have it save the configuration and you should be good to go. Enjoy.

OK, I get-apped xserver-svga, and ran XF86Setup again, still getting a blank screen though, so i'll have to crash out again. I'll have to tweak some file or other *before* i run XF86Setup, any ideas what, though?
Thanks!

I had that problem when I was installing several times. One thing I did was to switch to a different terminal (after I had messed up and selected yes and put it into a loop), log in as root, and run xf86config from the virtual terminal while it is still stuck in a loop at the regular console). It wasnt the greatest thing in the world, but it worked.
apt-get install task-x-window-system
just a guess????

Nope, "task-x-window-system is already the newest version".
Mountainman - I found I was unable to switch to any other consoles.
Any idea where I can go and see what video card it thinks I'm using, and what drivers it has installed? If i can see command-line stuff on the monitor, can I assume that the video card is working?
I was so impressed with the debian install as well - elegant I thought.
What video card do you use?

"Trident image linear accelerated for PCI/AGP V6.20.6440"
It's the first time this machine has had linux installed on it. I'm sure that problem must be the bug in the debain instal though and I'll get it working somehow. I'm just looking at the XF86Config file, but it doesn't mean a lot.
Thanks.
The only thing I can suggest at this point would be to play with either XF86Setup or xf86config until you find what works. If you don't already know the specs on your video card and monitor find out.

Rod

I think I'll have a look at my XF86Config file on my linux box at home. Thanks for your help, Rod, I'll post if i get it working. The monitor is a brand new one, the documentation with it seems to consist of how to get the installation disk and put it in the windows machine....

Bill - yes and no. I ran xf86config and got further down the line, but although xwindow now starts, I need to configure mouse and screen settings to make anything happen - see current thread on "Debian hasn't installed /dev/mouse during xf86config" in General Linux Questions for how this is going.
