This is news item. If there is a place to put it, I missed it. If this is not allowed, feel free to delete.

I came to our house in Mexico City for a few days. My nephew is some sort of sys admin for the City government. He is currently working for an office somewhat akin to Information and Referral. I know its name, but prefer not to use it since I got this via inside connections.

He says they have 500 computers, and during this year it is mandatory they change them all to Linux. Some are already up and running, and the Oracle servers (?) are Apache already. I asked him if this was for security or to save money.

He said, well, both. But, the main reason is the political party does not have the money for licenses for MS. And, being a political party, they prefer not to get involved in piracy, which is usually SOP here, because political opponents will use that against them.

They are using Mandriva. I asked if they have special programs they need. He laughed and said, yes, but they are written for Linux.

I am not totally innocent in this case. A few years ago, I think Mandrake 8.0 was current, he worked in another city office, and invited me to come in with the free version, and we set it up on a computer dual boot. I am sure I am not totally responsible for the change-over, but it was a few more people who saw Linux could work for them, and get them thinking of it as an option.

Not a big deal, but I thought I'd share it, if that is allowed.

One more brick in the wall. Why, if this continues, pretty soon the WHOLE world will be using Linux.

Good to hear this news.
