insmoding module natsemi failed at /usr/lib/ libdrakx/modules.pm line 532.
on searching for line 532, it says

also says cant open dependencies file /lib/ modules/2.48
now my dsl wont work, it says no ethernet detected.
i cant mount my windows drive as i was able to.

I don't exactly know what the problem you are having is, but the only thing I can think of to resolve some if not all of this is to install the kernel-source RPM, go into /usr/src/linux and recompile the kernel with the config file that is the linux kernel source directory. This is the file that would have been used to compile Mandrake's kernel originally.
If you are not sure about how to compile, read the NHF (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/kernelcomp.html) which can help you.
Good luck.
PS. If there is someone more knolagable than me about this issue, please correct me.

Ok - I think the problem is that it has been unable to install the device module required for your ethernet card, namely the 'natsemi' module.
Not sure why it's not mounting your windows drive, perhaps it's better to solve the first problem first.
Try going here (http://www.scyld.com/network/ethercard.html) and reading their info, as the driver is listed here. It may just be a matter of reinstalling the module.
Try running insmod natsemi (as su) and seeing if it posts any more helpful messages that might help tell us what has gone wrong while trying to install the module.

If it's not loading the ethernet card (no network access) I wouldnt be surprised that it's not mounting your windows shares. Sorry I cant offer more help, just thought I would trim your problem list down to just the network card...good luck

I finally gave up and did a re-install. i downloaded upgrades from mandrake and maybe i upgraded the kernel because my printers, floppies were saying they didnt support the filesystem.
well, thanx all for yr help, at least i set up my dsl right.
just have to figure out a way to backup on cd.
